Five Days at the Maryland Yacht Club

It was rather dreary and damp when we pulled up the anchor at Solomons Island. Our destination is the Maryland Yacht Club which is located almost exactly half way between the cut off to Annapolis and the city of Baltimore. Since we are planning to visit both places, this seemed like an ideal place to go. Along the way we saw several things that we have never seen in the Midwest.

Tugs that pull barges.

Yachts that pull dinghies the size of our boat.

Weather stations like this one.

We passed underneath the Chesapeake Bay Bridge which is one of the largest bridges that we have seen.

Boats, or at least ours, do not come equipped with rearview mirrors so Captain Mark was a little shocked to say the least when this boat sounded its horn so loudly that it completely scared the be-gee-zeeies out of us. As the smaller vessel it is our responsibility to give way to the larger commercial vessel and usually a commercial captain will use the radio to request passage if he thinks we do not realize his location. This captain however waited until he was really closer than was safe and swamped us with his wake. Again, it was our responsibility to know that he was behind us but there was enough room in the navigating channel that this type of seamanship was unnecessary. I will make it my duty to be more diligent in looking out for freighters in the future.

As we entered the Maryland Yacht Club basin, there are several very large rocks that jut out of the water. This is the first time in the Chesapeake that we have seen anything like this. Fortunately, the area was very well marked.

Hours on the water: 8.0
Nautical miles traveled: 63.6
Number of bridges to be opened: 0
Time spent waiting at bridge: 0
Next Destination: Baltimore
What we're listening to: The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
What we watched: Our back for other boats!
Lesson for the day: This was a really long day
Obligatory knitting report: Mittens for the Wunder Kids

Hi Linda,
Just signed on to ketch(boat) up on your adventure. I greatly enjoy your descriptions and photos.
Here's some news from Chicago.
We are doing great. Anna has started skating and dancing lessons, Orion is back at Crowleys. We sailed down to the boat yard last Friday, had a nice SW wind & averaged 7.5 knots. We had a very successful year with 6 new crew members. Marcella is the new Commodore and we started phase 1 of the bathroom remodeling. The City is getting ready for the Obama rally tomorrow. The island will be shutdown so I'm not sure where to park, Hope to see you at Macy's. Sincerely, Marty, Karen, and Anna
