We’ve joined the Marines

It rained off and on all night but we decided that we needed to get going. So for the first time, the Lolligag left harbor in a slight rain. It was a mild constant rain for the first couple of hours. Then we had a huge thunderstorm with the need for the windshield wipers to run full blast and lots of lightning and thunder. It was really very exciting but we were super snug inside the tug. We were also a bit smug as we passed sail boaters and other mariners whose boats did not offer the enclosed helm to protect them from the elements. The rain stopped at mid-afternoon but the humidity was worse than before.

Since it rained most of the day, I was not able to take many pictures. I was glad that it had stopped raining when we reached this house as it had its own lighthouse which I thought was way too cool!

Our anchorage for this evening will be within the waters of Marine Camp LeJuene along the North Carolina seacoast. I was really surprised when Captain Mark told me that we would be allowed to not only enter the “grounds” of Camp LeJuene but to anchor for the evening. The anchorage was a wonderfully sheltered and somewhat secluded bay just off the ICW. Now I have no doubt that we were scoped out and photographed every which way from Sunday, but it was cool just the same to think that we were on a military base. Of course, I had to call my Marine brother Bill to let him know where the Lolligag was anchored. I knew that he had been to this base while he was stationed at the Marine base at Cherry Point, North Carolina.
