After recovering from being “filmed” at the Deep Lock, we made our way the short distance to the end of the GDS canal and back into the Intracoastal Waterway leading to Norfolk. It happened so fast - we made a bend in the Great Dismal Swamp Canal and then suddenly we were back in civilization again. What a culture shock!
The first thing we encountered was a highway bridge/train bridge combination that needed to be lifted for us. Due to a glitch in their systems, it took almost an hour for the two bridges to rise. Then it was onto the industrial side of Norfolk and Portsmouth, Virginia.
A little way up the Elizabeth River with Norfolk on our starboard side and Portsmouth on our port side we passed Red Bouy 36 which officially marks mile zero the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.
We continued on our way to the Hampton Yacht Club for our evening’s dockage. Arriving at the HYC we found the staff to be most accommodating and the electrical outlet (for the air conditioning) to be a God send. Again today, the temperature was in the high 90 degrees. After such an exciting day, it was a quick shower, a good dinner and sleep in the wonderfully air conditioned Lolligag.
