The Naval Academy

We toured the grounds of the Naval Academy twice. Once with Lolligag crew members John and Georganne and then again as part of a formal guided tour. The architecture is unique and representative of almost every era in US history. The crypt of John Paul Jones lies directly beneath the chapel. Both the chapel and the crypt are steeped in history and heritage.

The Naval Academy was founded in 1845 by the Secretary of the Navy, George Bancroft, in Annapolis, Maryland. The campus was established on the grounds of the former US Army post Fort Severn. The school opened on October 10 with 50 Midshipmen students and seven professors. The history of the Academy has often reflected the history of the United States as our country moved from sailing vessels to nuclear powered submarines.

It is also known as "The Boat School" or "Canoe U." The Academy's motto is ex scientia tridens, which is Latin for "from knowledge, seapower" The trident, emblem of the Roman god Neptune, represents seapower.
